Ever since I saw my dad’s Svalbard DIA-slides from the early 60’s, I’ve wanted to visit these isolated islands. Last month I flew in for a few days trip.
The place is like a bad lover. It spends your money and steals your heart. One day gives warmth and the next is ice cold. Yet, it is so beautiful, mysterious and fun – you know you’re coming back for more.
Only 1309km to the North Pole
Unlike in the mainland, reindeers in Svalbard are wild.
Pretty sure the kids have a good imagination in here. No need for man-made playgrounds.
Pretty dogs on every corner
Got to taste the beer line of the world’s northern most brewery. The beer is made into 2000 years old glacier melting water. Tastes fresh!
Golden Arctic sun at 1:30am in the Longyearbyen valley
Abandoned mines along the surrounding hills.
The art of layering
Big boots to fill
Boat lunch in front of Nordenskiöld glacier
Polar bears are very curious and this one was no exception
Floating on an ancient piece of ice
A smile with the tightest neoprene hood on
These two were waiting for us
Planning the glacier walk
Trying hard to locate the polar bear
A day on the glacier had to be cancelled but for a good reason. The risk of the bear swimming across the bay to our side was too big.
Walking on diamonds
The Arctic Ocean now under my belt :)
This lodge is truly off the grid
Alaskan husky, Bush
The lodge has one necessity – a sauna!
Packing and heading back to the village
The calmest seas. In hopes of spotting a pod of Beluga whales.
Had a 2km walk from bar to home at 1:30am
Kayaking across the bay
Mid way of the climb to Hiortfjellet
Above the clouds
Back at the sea
Growing the bags under my eyes. Sleeping is not a priority on few days trip to a place like this.
“Welcome to Russia my friend”
The abandoned former Soviet Union village, Pyramiden.
Our guide was one the 8 people living in the village.
The northern most statue of Lenin
The tour naturally ended in the bar
I loved to walk around Longyearbyen at night
What must be the northern most skate ramp
I wanted to steal a dog :)
Until we meet again…
